Travelling
Earlier this year I got to go on a trip that I appreciate most (myself included) dream of. It was a case of timings being right and my partner and I’s savings being in the right spot that lead to 3 unforgettable months across Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam and Japan. Aside from the incredible life experience gained over those few months, I was treated to an exceptional array of scenery and wildlife to capture.
In terms of kit, I took only my essentials: my Sony A7iv, a Tamron 20-40mm f2.8 (chosen for it’s small form factor), and few ND’s and my trusty beetle clip to have it on my backpack straps.
Sri Lanka presented a society in harmony with nature, where the line between the towns and forests blur into one. I enjoyed heading out with my camera and not knowing what I was going to find, and could capture stunning views from mountain tops, colourful lizzards and monkeys, and bustling towns all on the same walk.
I found myself in love with the architecture in Thailand, and especially enjoyed walking around Bangkok. While it’s a country also saturated with stunning natural views, I gained an appreciation for photos of buildings and busy areas here that I haven’t had before.
Vietnam, the place where I learned how to take photos hanging off the back of a motorcycle speeding around the sharp turns of the Ha Giang Loop. It was an unforgettable experience that developed not only my skills as a photographer but also my love for meeting new people.
Japan was everything I wanted it to be and more. I fell in love with how in sync the poeple are with their surroundings, treating everything from their street to their forests with massive respect. I was able to shoot cities, mountains, forests, and traditional life, all within a few hours of each other. I can’t wait to return to Japan one day and explore areas away from the beaten track.
